Narrator Stina Nielsen enthralls with this sumptuous romance, which highlights her ability to thoroughly immerse listeners in its fantasy world. Used to living in near-isolation, Poppy finds little ways to rebel against the fate she has accepted. When a new guard gets closer to learning her secrets, stoking her desire, and empowering her decisions, Poppy realizes she has a choice–to fight the danger threatening her life or run. Nielsen employs a wide range of inflections, from the warm, breathless tone of the heroine to the appealing accent of Hawke, the love interest, combining them in the sensual scenes they share. The dramatic impact of her performance is framed perfectly in the audiobook’s world and will be a fan favorite. A.L.
